Flashdance

“Dance is the noblest of all skills, the only one in which we use only our own born body,” says Ivo Andrić. Grade 9 students indulged in this noble art as they delved into this art form during music classes. Our students were exposed to the magic of dancing, singing, and acting on 15th March 2024 at Terazije Theatre.
It’s not uncommon, even on Broadway and London’s West End, for a theatrical performance to be based on a film. Such is the case with the musical Flashdance. This theatrical hit was created based on the famous film that premiered in 1983, primarily remembered for its great hits and attractive dance numbers.
The musical Flashdance was adapted from the book by Tom Hedley and Robert Cary, with music by Robbie Roth and lyrics by Robert Cary and Robbie Roth.
The first rehearsal of the play at Terazije Theatre took place on 30th August 2021. The authorial team is led by director Vladan Đurković, song translations were done by Slobodan Obradović, orchestrations by Aleksandar Sedlar, choreography by Milica Cerović, conductors are Vesna Šouc and Milan Nedeljković, costume design by Jelena Stokuća, and set design by Marija Kalabić.
Flashdance the musical centres on ambitious Alex Owens, a girl who works hard during the day at a steel mill alongside numerous friends, while at night she performs at a local bar, showcasing her unique dance numbers.
The plot thickens when the son of the steel mill owner, Nick Hurley, appears at the factory and falls in love with Alex, a worker at his parents’ factory. Meanwhile, her best friend Gloria encourages Alex to gather her strength and pursue her dream by auditioning for the prestigious Shipley Academy.
With the clumsy moves of a wealthy young man and the son of influential parents, Nick threatens her desire for independence and success in his own way, while the dismissal of her friends from work, as well as the increasingly frequent performances of girls from the upscale Harry’s Bar at a club of dubious reputation due to the crisis, cast a darker shade on this love story.

Most associations with the musical Flashdance are mainly tied to musical numbers like “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”, “Gloria”, “Maniac”, “What a Feeling”… as well as dance numbers, one of the building blocks of this musical.
A special interest in this staging of the musical Flashdance is the involvement of several young participants making their first appearance at Terazije Theatre. They are Nevena Nerandžić, Mina Nenadović, Arsenije Tubić, as well as Marta Bogosavljević and Teodora Tomašev, who, like Alex, auditioned for the show. In the latest production at Terazije Theatre, in addition to our actors, a large number of new young actors are also making their debut in the theatre, all of whom were also selected through auditions.
If any of the acrobatic moves are performed in the hall, or if a favourite verse is sung an octave higher, let’s be tolerant, blame it on Flashdance.
