The Upstart at the National Theatre

Sterija is considered the father of Serbian drama, and The Upstart is the only one of his works studied at the primary school level. Grade 8 and Grade 9 students had the chance to experience the play in a live performance on 21st April 2026 at the National Theatre. They thoroughly enjoyed the actors’ brilliant performances, the comedy and slapstick, the humorous attempts at learning French, and the imaginative staging. The following day at school, they discussed the performance with their Serbian language teacher, worked through their questions, and proved themselves to be excellent theatre critics. Of particular interest to Grade 9 students was the opportunity to hear Slavonic-Serbian spoken on stage. Theatres the world over can look forward to a wonderful audience in our students. In the years to come, the stage and curtain will have worthy admirers to reveal their secrets, beauty, and art to.
