Lecture by Prof. Mandy Scott on Differences Between English Variants
Grade 8 students attended a lecture by PhD. Mandy Scott, honorary lecturer from the Australian National University, who spoke about the differences between English language variants. Using examples from the Harry Potter series, she illustrated the distinctions between British and American English. Many students were already familiar with various words and differences, and they actively participated in the discussion, sharing examples from their personal experiences during travels, movies, books, or stories from friends and relatives. The topic of the lecture was “Harry Potter in Translation and what it tells us about language and culture,” which inspired reflections on language and culture. It is always a pleasure to host such inspirational speakers, further fostering intercultural understanding.
