Languages Bring Us Together – Exploring and Learning

To mark the European Day of Languages, which we traditionally celebrate at our school, we decided to dedicate an entire week to languages, linguistic diversity and the importance of learning foreign languages.

Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to explore, collaborate, exchange ideas and learn in creative ways. They took part in engaging quizzes about languages from around the world, prepared presentations and posters, watched short films, and worked on individual and group research projects.

Through quizzes and discussions, students discovered interesting facts about languages and reflected on how language connects people, cultures and different perspectives. The activities encouraged them to develop curiosity, research, communication and collaboration skills, while also becoming more open to different cultures and ways of thinking.

These activities also provided an opportunity for students to develop the attributes of the IB Learner Profile. They were inquirers as they asked questions and discovered new information, communicators as they presented their ideas and collaborated with others, and open-minded as they explored different perspectives and expanded their knowledge of languages and cultures around the world.

The European Day of Languages reminds us that learning a language is about much more than acquiring new words and grammatical rules. Every new language opens the door to a new culture, a different perspective on the world and new opportunities to connect with others.

That is why we believe that by learning languages, we learn to understand the world – and one another – better.
