Día de Muertos

The Day of the Dead is a Mexican traditional holiday which is celebrated for three days every year, from 31 October to 2 November. To mark this occasion, the MYP students who learn Spanish took part in a very interesting workshop. They visited Colors 4U Art Studio where they decorated pottery with the symbols of this holiday.

Our hostess, Mrs Tania Libertad Heredia, who is from Mexico, gave a talk in Spanish about what this holiday represents. She explained to the students that families gather on this day to honour the dead festively by taking part in a celebration stemming from pagan Aztec customs. Family members leave food, drink, and even toys at the graveyards as gifts for the souls of their ancestors. At the end of this workshop, the students were treated to some hot chocolate and traditional bread “Pan de Muertos”, which is served on this day.

Now, we are waiting for our pottery creations to arrive, and we look forward to another opportunity to explore Mexican culture.
