“Bananas, Bananas… Can You Understand Me?”

On Wednesday, 13th May, Year 7 students taking English Language Acquisition took part in a showcase lesson entitled “Bananas, Bananas… Can You Understand Me?”, designed in line with the principles of the IB MYP programme and the inquiry unit Why is language so important?
Through a series of creative and dynamic activities, students explored how communication works even when words fall away. Using only the word “banana” in various forms, alongside body language, facial expressions, tone of voice, movement, and collaboration with their peers, students successfully conveyed meaning and navigated everyday communicative situations.
Throughout the lesson, students developed ATL skills across communication, collaboration, and social interaction, while reflecting on the role of language in connecting people, cultures, and ideas. Particular focus was placed on understanding nonverbal communication, developing empathy for those who do not share the same language, and appreciating the importance of context in making sense of communication.
The atmosphere in the classroom was wonderfully positive and encouraging — students had a great deal of fun, demonstrated creativity and a willingness to take risks in communication, whilst also learning to listen carefully, collaborate, and support one another. Throughout the lesson, students embodied the IB Learner Profile attributes of Communicator, Open-minded, Risk-taker, Caring, and Reflective.

Through play, laughter, and shared problem-solving, students came to realise that communication is so much more than words alone, and that language is one of the most powerful ways in which we connect with one another.
