With Isidora
We are certain that all Ruđer students from Grade 6 onwards know who stands among the most significant women of Serbian culture at the beginning of the 20th century. Someone whose intellect, talent, creativity, integrity, principles, and spiritual depth marked the first half of that century. Undoubtedly, the name Isidora Sekulić must be linked with all of these qualities.
A mathematician by training, Doctor of Philosophy, translator, polyglot, novelist, and travel writer, Isidora left a remarkable legacy to the University Library: around 2,000 books, numerous paintings, as well as her study and writing desk, which remain accessible to all admirers of her work.
On 19th November 2025, our Grade 7 students had the opportunity to visit her Memorial Room, as well as the rare privilege of entering one of the reading rooms of the University Library. The students demonstrated extensive knowledge about our celebrated writer, and they were also able to see her fountain pen, inkwells (black and blue), glance through her passport, and look at photographs from Montenegro. They learned that rare books may only be handled while wearing gloves to prevent damage and reduce the need for conservation work.
They strengthened and expanded their knowledge of the first woman to become a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and they were able to visualise the young girl who, sitting in a barrel, “is dreaming of her own Robinsonade”.
