We Wore Pink – We Chose Courage
This year, we marked the International Day Against Bullying — Pink T-Shirt Day not just with a single day, but with an entire week dedicated to understanding, empathy, and responsible behaviour.
Inspired by the story that began in Nova Scotia through the Pink Shirt Day initiative, our students showed that solidarity is not simply a symbol represented by a pink shirt, but an everyday choice.
Learning Through Discussion and Media
Throughout the week, students watched short educational videos on bullying and cyberbullying and then took part in guided discussions. Special focus was placed on the following questions:
- What does “I was only joking” really mean?
- Is forwarding a message or a video clip a form of bullying?
- How should a bystander respond?
Through open dialogue, we developed critical thinking skills and the ability to view situations from a range of perspectives.
The Words We Choose Make a Difference
Through workshops, students practised turning sharp and impulsive remarks into neutral, assertive, and considerate messages. In doing so, they learnt that communication has the power to de-escalate rather than deepen conflict.
Stop – Think – Choose
Particular attention was given to developing self-regulation skills. Students practised a simple three-step strategy:
- Stop – pause
- Think – consider the consequences
- Choose – select the best course of action
This exercise encouraged students to reflect on their own behaviour – both in the classroom and in digital environments.
Students as Agents of Change
During the closing activities, students proposed ideas for future anti-bullying campaigns – ranging from themed days and podcast episodes to school challenges that promote kindness and positive thinking.
The week’s events were celebrated in a true IB spirit. Our students demonstrated that they are:
- open-minded – willing to listen to and understand others,
- caring – ready to offer support,
- communicators – aware of the power of words,
- whilst also developing strong self-management skills through impulse control and responsible decision-making.
A pink shirt is a symbol. But the choice to be thoughtful, courageous, and principled – that is what truly makes a difference!
