Visiting a recycling plant
As part of their work within the inquiry unit Sharing the Planet, Grade 3 students visited the recycling center that belongs to the Public Utility Company – City Sanitation. They had the opportunity to see the plant where the collected waste is sorted and then packed for further recycling. The hosts explained to the students how glass is crushed, how cans are separated and what is done with the waste that is mixed with different types of litter. They also saw containers and recycling islands that are placed in different parts of the city. Our students were curious, asked questions and received, as a gift, sets of recycling boxes which they would assemble themselves. In the end, they all weighed together on a scale that measures trucks with the waste brought for recycling.
