Puglia Travel Journal – Year III School Trip, Ruđer Bošković High School
From 5th to 9th October 2025, the Year III students of Ruđer Bošković High School had the opportunity to visit the “heel of the Italian boot,” Puglia – a land of sun, sea, history, and unique architecture.
The school trip began with an early morning flight to Bari. Upon landing, we visited the town of Trani, where we saw the famous cathedral right on the seafront. Afterwards, we returned to Bari, the capital of Puglia, and explored its landmarks: the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Cathedral of Saint Sabinus, the Svevo Castle, and the city squares. We then checked in at the Residence Hotel Moderno.
The next day featured a full-day outing. First, we visited Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world, known for its distinctive cave houses. Then we traveled to Alberobello, famous for its stone “trulli” houses, which are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
On the third day, after breakfast, we went to the coastal town of Monopoli, where we toured the historic centre, the harbour, the cathedral, and the Castle of Charles V. Students had some free time to stroll around, enjoy the sea, and explore the town on their own.
The final day was dedicated to visiting Ostuni, known as the White City because of its distinctive white architecture. After that, we went to Polignano a Mare, a cliffside town above the Adriatic Sea, famous for its beautiful viewpoints and historic town centre.
Early in the morning, we left the hotel and headed to the airport. We landed at 11:10 a.m., having enjoyed so many amazing experiences and made lasting memories.
Throughout the trip, Puglia welcomed us with open arms—and quite a playful wind! The breeze from the sea seemed like nature itself was giving us a windy welcome: hair flying everywhere, but no one complained, and we couldn’t stop laughing! The wind followed us as we walked along the coast, tried to take nice photos, and held onto our hoods as if we were in an adventure movie. Yet, it all added to the charm of the experience. We had a fantastic time, grew even closer as a group, and made the most of every day. It was so enjoyable that all of us, without exception, wished the trip could have lasted at least a few days longer!
