Outing to Sremski Karlovci
On 20 May, Grade 7 students had the opportunity to spend the day in one of the most beautiful and historically significant places of Serbian cultural heritage — Sremski Karlovci.
Our first stop was the Karlovci Gymnasium, the oldest Serbian high school, founded back in 1791. We walked its historic hallways, visited the Memorial Library, and learned about the school’s rich educational tradition, the notable figures who once studied there, and the strict rules that once shaped school life.
Next, we visited the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas, an impressive 18th-century building known for its striking architecture and importance within the cultural heritage of the region.
One of the most memorable moments of our outing was our visit to the Seminary building and the former Patriarchal Palace. There, students had the opportunity to discover what everyday life and education looked like in centuries past. A rich collection of icons, books and historical artefacts, authentic furnishings, and especially the vivid storytelling of our guide brought the past to life before our eyes.
We rounded off with a real challenge — the climb to Stražilovo, a well-known picnic area and the location of the monument to the renowned poet Branko Radičević. Though the trail was demanding, the students bravely tackled every obstacle, and their reward was a sense of accomplishment upon reaching the top.
Of course, no outing would be complete without fun and games — volleyball, football, exploring the woods, and sweet treats made the day even more enjoyable, all accompanied by the sunshine that stayed with us through the whole adventure.
After everything we saw and experienced, it became clear why Karlovci is often chosen as the filming location for many Serbian films and TV series — because every corner here tells a story.
