Defunct
As part of the Film Festival, the third year students had the opportunity to watch, in the main competition program, the Greek film Defunct, 2019. 30-something failed businessman Aris finds shelter into his grandpa Aristides’ house, a WW2 veteran, deceased long ago. When Aris reunites with old friends, life in conservative Papagou, the suburb of the Army Generals, turns into a wishful new beginning. He reboots his business and settles in while he silently slips into his grandpa’s slippers. Soon, he befriends Vasos, a neighbor and old comrade of Aristides. As he becomes increasingly eager to live up to his grandpa’s legacy, Aris is confronted with old family secrets. Through remodeling the family hero, Aris eventually reinvents himself.
The film was directed by Zacharias Mavroedis, with Michalis Sarantis in the main role. Beautiful sounds of Greek music, the melody of the Greek language, scenography of thriving crowns of oranges, made us longing for the sea, and brought a real refreshment in these rainy days of March.
