CAS Project: Chemistry in the Service of the Community – Creative Soaps
As part of the CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) programme, Grade 12 Diploma Programme students, Anđela Vučković, Maria Bozalo and Aleksandra Kopylova, have created handmade soaps that will be exhibited and sold at the New Year’s Bazaar on 18th December. All proceeds from the sales will be donated entirely to humanitarian causes and directed towards local organizations that assist those most in need.
Through this project, the students applied their knowledge of chemistry by exploring saponification, a process in which a base, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), reacts with triglycerides—fats or oils—breaking ester bonds and releasing fatty acid salts (soap) and glycerol. This hands-on experience helped them better understand chemical reactions while allowing them to engage with the entire soap-making process, from chemistry to the final product’s design. Through this project, the students were able to integrate science, art, and teamwork to create a meaningful impact on their community.
We warmly invite everyone to visit the fair, purchase soaps with unique designs, and support this noble initiative. By buying these soaps, you are contributing to a charitable cause and helping students use creativity and collaboration to make a positive difference in society, fostering solidarity during the upcoming festive season.
