A Visit to Viminacium and Srebrno Jezero

On 22nd May 2024, Grade 6 and 7 students found respite from the demanding end of the school year on their outing. They visited Viminacium, a Roman city and military camp dating back to the 1st century AD. The tour guide’s story was both interesting and highly educational.

The tale of the former glory and downfall of the Roman city and military camp of Viminacium has captured the attention not only of the national but also the global audience, who eagerly awaits Viminacium to rightfully claim its place on the world’s cultural and historical stage. The area of the former Roman city and military camp of Viminacium (spanning over 450 hectares of wider urban and 220 hectares of urban territory) is now located beneath cultivated surfaces. Over the last three decades of the 20th century, excavations of Viminacium’s necropolis have uncovered more than 13,500 graves. An interdisciplinary team of exceptional experts from various fields is working on the exploration of the Roman city and military camp. Their desire is for the marketplaces and temples, theaters and hippodromes, baths, streets, and city quarters to emerge from the confines where they have been for centuries and become part of both the world’s and our cultural heritage, as well as a symbol of the Danube region.

Viminacium, the students visited Srebrno jezero (Silver Lake), enjoying nature and lakeside walks, as well as engaging in numerous sports activities that were never long enough.

The bus ride was filled with wonderful camaraderie, laughter, and songs, while silent affections blossomed discreetly.
