From Waste to Art: MYP Students Explore Sustainability at the Museum of African Art

As the school year drew to a close, our MYP students continued to expand their knowledge in an engaged and inquiry-driven way through visits to cultural institutions. This time, they visited the thematic exhibition Recy: Art – Waste as a Resource at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade.

Through the artistic and craft practices of African communities, the exhibition sheds light on one of the most pressing global challenges of our time – the growing problem of waste and the possibilities of transforming it into a valuable resource. Students had the opportunity to see objects made from recycled materials such as plastic, metal, glass, textile, and rubber, gaining insight into creative and sustainable solutions that contribute to environmental preservation and the economic empowerment of local communities.

The visit fostered the development of ATL skills in critical thinking, research, and communication, while students demonstrated IB learner profile attributes including being inquirers, thinkers, open-minded, and caring. Exploring the connections between art, sustainability, and social responsibility, students reflected on their own role in building a more sustainable future and on the global consequences of consumer habits.

With this inspiring visit, we bring another school year to a successful close – a year rich in experiences that connect learning with the real world and encourage students to become active and responsible citizens of the global community.
