Stranger
Our students attended a screening of the film The Stranger, which was part of the Belgrade Film Festival programme. The 2025 film The Stranger, directed by François Ozon, is based on Albert Camus’s 1942 novel L’Étranger (The Stranger).
Set in Algeria in 1938, the story follows Meursault, a man in his early thirties, who attends his mother’s funeral without shedding a single tear. Soon after, he returns to his ordinary routine. However, on a scorching day at the beach, a tragic incident occurs, leading to a trial that questions not only the crime itself but also Meursault’s character.
Audience reactions were largely positive. Some students commented that the film “shook their musical universe” after they made a connection between the lyrics of a song by The Cure and Camus’s novel. The cinematography was described as outstanding. The film’s black-and-white format came as a surprise to many viewers. Strange, powerful, slow yet intense.
