PYP students marked the European Day of Languages
In order to promote multilingualism and European cultural heritage, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated on 26 September every year since 2001 on the initiative of the Council of Europe.
The students of Grade 3, 4 and 5 and their teachers also contributed to the celebration of the European Day of Languages in the KAŠ classes on 22nd and 24th of September.
Students from all six classes had a short lecture on the importance of linguistic diversity and nurturing cultural heritage and participated in thematic workshops that were also related to the topics they have been covering within the PYP Programme.
Thus, Grade 3 students, who are currently working on the identity of an individual, group, community and/or nation, learned that the Serbian language is specific in that it has 2 alphabets, so, among other things, the students had the task to separate Cyrillic and Latin letters in groups. The second task was to put a photo of a dish that is a national speciality of a given country on the plate with the name of the European country written on it.
Grade 4 students had the opportunity to learn that words derived from Latin and ancient Greek are used in the languages of many European nations. Their task was to connect the parts of words that are related to the topic they are currently dealing with (Human body), such as: diagnosis, cardiologist, pediatrician, medicine, pharmacy, etc.
G5 students have learned that around 200 languages are used in everyday communication in Europe. Since the topic of various political systems and rulers is being covered during their regular classes, the students had the task of recognizing the capitals of a dozen European countries based on the given photos, writing the names of those countries and finding the appropriate flag for each country.
All students deserve praise for their enthusiasm and openness for learning!
